Uruguay Coach Tabarez: Salah Would Have Made Difference For Egypt

Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has admitted that his side were lucky not to have faced Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in their opening Russia 2018 World Cup Group A win over Egypt on Friday.

Salah suffered a shoulder injury in the Champions League final against Real Madrid and was hugely missed in the encounter as the Pharaohs lost 1-0 to Uruguay.

Tabarez believes the Liverpool star would have made the differnce for Hector Cuper’s side in the encounter.

Jose Jimenez scored a late header to hand Uruguay their first win in an opening match since 1970.

Uruguay had not won their opening match at their last six World Cup tournaments.

“The experience today will help us grow, but we can’t make too much of it,” Tabarez said in his post-match interview.

“If Mo Salah had been on the pitch, I’m sure Egypt would have benefitted. But we had matches in qualifying without Suarez and Cavani, and that’s just how it is.”
