US Open: Halep Suffers Early Exit

World number one Simona Halep suffered an early exit at the ongoing US Open after losing 6-2 6-4 to Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi.

It was the first time in 50 years that a top seed in the women’s category lost in the opening round at the US Open since the professional era began in 1968, the same year that the tournament was renamed having previously been known as the US National Championships.

Halep became the first top-seeded in the women’s category to lose in the US Open first round.

Recall that the 26-year-old also lost her opening match at Flushing Meadows last year where she was beaten by French Open champion Maria Sharapova in New York in 2017.

Halep who won the French Open in June for her first Grand Slam title is assured of remaining at No. 1 after the U.S. Open, despite her first-round departure.
