Uzoho Confirms Super Eagles Blow, Out Of Action For Four Weeks

By Johnny Edward:
Super Eagles goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, has ruled himself out of Nigeria’s 2019 Africa Cup Of Nations qualifier against South Africa on the 17th of November due to injury, reports Completesportnigeria.com.

The 20 year old will be out for four weeks after he suffered a concussion.

Uzoho is one of the three goalkeepers invited by Gernot Rohr for the Super Eagles’ top of the table clash against South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

The Deportivo La Coruna loanee, who conceded five goals in Elche’s 5-1 loss away to Cadiz tweeted on his Twitter handle @Uzohof on Mknday: “Injury is part of the game, definitely not the best timing but there are things beyond us.

“So sad I won’t be there for my teammates for the next four weeks 😭they’re more than capable to get the job done. Coming back a beast. IN CHRIST ALONE.

Rober Correa started the Cadiz’s massive comeback win in the 50th minute by canceling out Sory Kaba’s opener for Elche at the Estadio Ramon de Carranza.

Goals from Dejan Lekic, Jose Mari, Salvi, Manu Vallejo within 25 minutes wrecked Pacheta’s men and left them in the 14th spot in the Spanish Segunda Division table.

Uzoho has kept two clean sheets (vs. Malaga and Real Zaragoza) so far in three Spanish Segunda games and has conceded five goals.

  • Big blow, Ezenwa has been inactive since the world cup.
Akpenyi is not an option as they know all his weakness.

    Invite Afolekahi fro Enyimba.
Or anther Europe based keeper urgently.
    Rohr pls do something quick.

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA 1 week ago

This is so sad for Nigeria. Now who do we have. The South
Africans knows Akpeyi so well, the reason we lost that first leg to them at home in June 2018. Ezenwa is not even playing for his home-based Club.. l hope those guys teasing the young Uzoho can now size the opportunity to bring some body else forward.

  • Ash Willams 1 week ago

Akpeyi will do just fine. He played well against Egypt when Ikeme took ill.
    He is very experienced.

  • Jensen Josh 1 week ago

Big blow indeed….Akpeyi not an option, Ezenwa is not too good as well he has even been inactive for quite some time now, Maybe afelokhai should get the nod or Ugbade from German bundesliga 3  God bless N

  • Chairmanfemi 1 week ago

@Ash williams, you must be on Dry weeds. No be only Akpeyi! Abeg i just one to believe anyone that mention Akpeyi is just joking.
    Ezenwa? NO
    AKPEYI? BIG NO!!!

Better to invite Afelokhai, or any Euro based keepers even if he plays in Div. 5. The thing is anyone invited will one to seize the opportunity and bring his A game

  • Chairmanfemi 1 week ago

That Ugbade of Germany that most people in this forum laughed at might just be the solution. Coach Gernot Rohr should please invite someone to the team not just to fill the gap but to also play on that day.

  • Greenturf 1 week ago

Ezenwa is the second choice goalkeeper and should get the nod to start. However,we may object to that choice but the coach thinks differently.
The goalkeeper coach will work on him to get him ready for the all important game.
Meanwhile,Ezenwa and Akpeyi have deputised for Uzoho so it’s just normal for one of them to succeed him if he’s not available for selection.I do not see the coach looking elsewhere because if he had a better choice he should be in the team long ago.
I hope who gets the nod between Akpeyi and Ezenwa gives us a great shift against South Africa.
    God bless Nigeria!

  • Wow! Now this is huge. Akpeyi’s main problem is his acute lack of confidence and that spoils everything for him. He needs to work closely with a sports psychologist to be at the top of his game. I think he has sharp reflexes though, but his lack of confidence gives everyone else a lack of confidence in him too and leads to all sorts of problems at the back.

Afelokhai is my best bet to take the gloves. He has massive CAF clubs competitions continental experience and is a fireball of confidence in goal. Every goal I’ve seen him concede is hardly directly his fault. But the goalkeeper trainers will still need to work on him and start camping him early. South Africa’s team will be 80% made up of PSL players, so Afelokhai should be up to the task (He’s faced the best clubs in Africa over the last couple of months).

Of course, Ezenwa is not an option and shouldn’t have even been included in the list in the first place. Afelokhai benches Ezenwa and Dauda (former Ghana Black Stars goalkeeper) at Enyimba and that alone says a lot. Besides, one or 2 of his teammates will be on the plane to SA for the match (Adetunji). I can bet with this news, Rohr is going to invite Afelokhai. This is his chance. I know he won’t concede a goal. Doubters will get a chance to see what some of us have been talking about.

  • _ Akpeyi’s Rebirth? _

If there is one thing Akpeyi has proven to be good at, it is stepping up to provide back up when required.
    .
As a first choice goalkeeper, Akpeyi has been found wanting but when he was called upon to replace an unwell Ikeme against Egypt, he actually did very well in that match.
    .
I like Akpeyi however the South African based net-minder has lost the faith of a large section of fans so much so that his damaged reputation seems highly beyond repair or redemption.
    .
Post-Ikeme, Akpeyi literally went from being number 1 to number 3 in the eyes of Rohr and number 100 in the eyes of many fans.
    .
Now with Uzoho injured, is this fertile ground for Akpeyi to begin to propel himself back to being the undisputed Super Eagles number one goalie?

    • @Deo, I remember that match away to Egypt in 2016 under the tutelage of Siasia. Akpeyi may man the post and rise to the big occasion when called up for some matches, but I beg Rohr not to field him for the SA game. Like Edoman said up there, they know him so well and his weaknesses and seeing in the opposing goal post will boost the South Africans’ confidence. In fact, in some of the comments on SA soccer blogs, they were praying that Rohr fields Akpeyi in goal. So, I think Akpeyi should be rested for this match. He’s not well rated/regarded in the PSL and I’ve watched him concede some really cheap goals in their league.

      • Hi Kel,
I have to admit that I have not kept up with Akpeyi’s performances at the South African league but judging by what you said now and what Dr Drey has alluded to previously, he does not appear to be performing impressively despite playing regularly.
As a result, I bow to your superior knowledge.
I still feel that there is no cause for alarm as the Super Eagles handlers should be able to provide a credible goalkeeper to man the post in the absence of Uzoho.
        We wait and see….

  • Omo9ja 1 week ago

I wish you a speedy recovery bro. Where are the people kicking against me on this forum about coach Rohr? They said I hate Gernot Rorh, how could I? Now they have seen what I have been talking about?

How could him rely on one goalkeeper? I don’t get this. Last week, we were discussing about Victor Moses, Mikel and Onazi, this week, goalkeeper issue. This is now right.

Akpeyi is not up to the task while Enzenwa is not stable. Are we going to continue this way?

It’s not about South Africa match I’m talking about but we need a complete team. Best 2 to 3 best players in one position, that is how it should be. Jamilu Collins is not 100% fit too. Which way forward Nigerians. God bless Nigeria!!!

Shut up you he-goat. What’s wrong with keeping faith in your number shot stopper. You talk like there are hundreds of goalkeepers out there for us

Always looking for a way to paint (our best coach ever) black

    • Omo9ja 1 week ago

Sorry for my typing mistakes. God bless Nigeria!!!

  • Are you ok? It’s better to leave the post empty than to use Akpeyi as keeper.

  • Rohr should be very careful in his decision cos if he fail to get a point in south africa nigeria fans will never forgive him. He may loose his job. Super eagles have never lost to south africa in a competitive match. But rohr allow south africa to break that record in uyo. He better look for a good replacement for uzoho and colins now b4 is too late we r not ready for any excuse from him if he lost to south africa.

  • @ash Williams, are you ok at all?
It’s better to use empty post than using Akpei. Afelokhai is the best to take the gloves. He has massive CAF clubs competitions, continental experience and is confident in post. Every goal I’ve seen him conceded is hardly directly his fault. I still don’t know what the did to offend our coach who always refuse to invite him in place of ezenwa tha always sit on bench.

  • God bless you Elico. Nigerians are watching. We don’t know what Afelokhai did to him.

Rohr Cala up Afelokhai for injured Uzoho.

This is the same keeper that benches Ezenwa at Eyimba. Good call by the coach. https://sportinglife.ng/rohr-calls-up-afelokhai-for-injured-uzoho/

  • Victor Onyeanum 1 week ago

The big question that some of us asked on this platform prior to the world cup was :”will Rohr manufacture players for Nigeria?” The goalkeepers in the SE now seem to be the best that Nigeria has anywhere in the world for now. I am not saying this with much certainty, so let anybody correct me if I’m wrong. I say so because apart from Ugbade in Germany that has been suggested (and some people have already rejected him) and Afelokhai, the suggestions are either Ezenwa or Akpeyi. Can Omo9ja tell us how Rohr can be implicated in the dearth of credible goalkeepers of Nigerian descent? Can Omo9ja suggest a good goalkeeper who should have been in the SE ab initio but is not there now? This is Nigeria’s problem, not Rohr’s. He has to use what he has. Having said that, I think that though Afelokhai is a bit more active than Ezenwa, if the coaches had considered him to be that good, they would have invited him before now. Therefore, Akpeyi who is more active than Ezenwa should be given the nod. I believe he won’t fall twice to the same foe.

#Shasan you need to edit your comment. You made a mistake. You said its better to leave the goalpost empty than use Akpeyi. Is there any FIFA rule like that in football? But if you are trying to make a strong point against Akpeyi with this hyperbole, then you can bet that you are totally wrong. Akpeyi is the first choice keeper of his club in South Africa. I heard he has been their goalkeeper going to 10yrs or more. So I don’t get the point you and others like you are making. I noticed that it is only when Super Eagles are at home that he panics. It is a psycho thing. If he isn’t that good, he will not be in the Super Eagles. We are all right to express our opinions but in this critical stage, the coaches will decide whether to invite a new keeper or get do with the ones remaining. Ezenwa and Akpeyi are good. They can manage. What all of us need to do at this crucial and critical time is to support the coaches and the players. Our write ups are being read by all including Akpeyi and Ezenwa. Our write ups should be encouraging and not downheartening. For now they are our best until another keeper come and take over. So let us support the remaining goalkeepers massively with our supportive write-ups. Let’s use our reasonableness in this instance or we will reap disaster because of our negative criticism of the goalkeeper we will be using on d-day. For now let’s be smart. Any goalkeeper will definitely panic after reading all this negativity about them. We are shooting our self guys.

    • Ayphillydegreat 1 week ago

That’s not true Akpeyi hasn’t been the first choice goalie at Chippa United for 10years. He only went to SA league around 2015 or 2016. Well SuperEagles only need to avoid defeat so whoever man the post in the absence of Uzoho should be just fine.

      • BigD 1 week ago

Yes Akpeyi moved from heartland to Chippa in 2015/16 season (3 years). he is their first choice goalkeeper. He has played 94 games for them, has had 93 goals scored against him in that time and 33 clean sheets.

Personally I’d prefer Afelokhai to man the posts, but ultimately its up to the coaches to decide depending on who does best during training.

Ezenwa must be saying to himself “Theo again??” lolz

    BREAKING NEWS!!!
    Exclusive – Theophilus
    Afelokhai Called Up As
    Replacement For Injured
    Uzoho For South Africa
    Tie

Elche goalkeeper Francis Uzoho has been ruled
out of the Super Eagles of Nigeria clash against
South Africa in the AFCON 2019 Qualifiers due
to an injury which will keep him out for four
    weeks.
    As reported by Owngoalnigeria.com earlier
today, Uzoho left the pitch on a stretcher after
conceding five goals in Elche’s 5-1 loss against
Cadiz yesterday with an issue related to
    improper breathing.

The club has now confirmed he won’t be
available for the next four weeks which
effectively rules him out of Nigeria’s game
against South Africa in the AFCON 2019
Qualifiers and also the friendly game against
    Uganda.
To that effect first choice goalkeeper of
    Enyimba Theophilus Afelokhai has been
contacted to act as cover for the duo of
Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi who were
the other goalkeepers in the list for the games.
Afelokhai was first choice ahead of Ezenwa in
Enyimba’s CAF Confederation Cup campaign, no
thanks to the disciplinary issue that made the
team to suspend regular first choice shot
    stopper Fatau Dauda .

  • Edoman of New Jersey, USA. 1 week ago

From a source, l am hearing that some reliable NFF Technical committee members are pushing Rohr to hand Theophilus Afelokpai the Gloves. This is a National emergency situation we are all in. Imo. Lets pray that logic and common sense prevail upon those whose responsibility rests to take a wise decisions.

  • Ayphillydegreat 1 week ago

Afelokhai will be the best option to either Akpeyi or Ezenwa in all fairness, but it’s up to the coach to make that decision after seeing them in close quarters in training.

  • tayo 1 week ago

Niaja people, honestly i don’t know what this Akpeyi did that people hate him so much like this?. Our loss against south Africa wasn’t solely his fault the whole team played bad that day. Some are calling for Afellokahi, that is the Messiah now, so if you re a coach you will bring a person who hasn’t train with the team at all for the first time and throw him straight into first eleven when you have others who have been deputising for a long time with lots of experience. Akpeyi or Ezenwa will start that match and they will do well even if Afellokahi or what is his name later get invited he will not play mark my word except he is the best goalkeeper in the world.

  • I think Rohr will be in a dillema about who should guard the post come November 17. Can he trust the obviously match-rusty Ezenwa to come good or Akpeyi who’s well known to the SA strikers and midfielders? Or will he risk the goalminder’s task to a newcomer in Afelokhai to walk straight to the role?

But one thing you have to give to Rohr is he’s never afraid to make a bold decision and it’s been working for him. Uzoho was effectively promoted to the number 1 shirt after Akpeyi goofed in the 4-2 friendly win over Argentina in Russia pre-World Cup. What was the difference on the day between the 2 goalkeepers? Akpeyi has sharp reflexes, but Uzoho never gets stage fright, despite his young age, and his super confident postures was a boost to the team and a spring in their legs.

Whoever Rohr chooses between the sticks for the SA match will be a wild guess. One thing can be guaranteed, his final choice will clearly be based on merit. Of course, there’s also the Uganda friendly to test the other goalkeepers who sit on the bench in the SA game.

Another likely outcome of all this is after these 2 matches, one of the 3 regular goalkeepers call ups may be dropped to make room for a new face.

    • Dr. Drey 1 week ago

Ezenwa is the de facto 2nd choice goal keeper in the super eagles. I laugh when people say there is a goalkeeping crisis in the team. We have 3 goalkeepers, no 1 Uzoho, no 2 Ezenwa, no 3 -another nigerian goalkeeper…and this 3rd group includes the likes of Akpeyi, Afelokhai, Ajiboye, Olufemi Kayode, Okiemute Odah, Moses ocheje Olorunleke Ojo, and David Obiazo. Unfortunately…all of them are much on the same level, non is more exceptional than the other…even the much touted Afelokai. Of course Afelokai is getting more games and more spotlight ahead of the rest, thanks to enyimba’s CAF CC campaigns. But make no mistakes about it, there’s currently no goalkeeping crisis in the national team as we speak. barring any unforeseen circumstances…Ezenwa gets his turn to man the post come the 17th

  • Chima E Samuels 1 week ago

If Akpeyi players then the South African players knows its a confirmed victory for them because they know and mock him a lot even before the last game on kickoff their fans mocked the hell out of him and they confirmed it by beating him twice also the highlighted goal of Nabil Bentaleb from more than 20yards against Akpeyi was a disaster. This highlights the flaws of Rohr to keep having this sort of psl player in camp. Akpeyi is good but not all player must be in the SE. With all this been said Theofilus gets the shot and the coach should try to see to with the help of his scout about keepers like Ajiboye, Alampasu and Emmanuel Daniel with regards to subsequent matches because the Akpeyi as back up will make Uzoho feel confident but I bet with the above mentioned keepers they will run Uzoho rugged and expose or bring out the best in him.

    • Chima E Samuels 1 week ago

Ezenwa was good but I don’t know what happened to his form after that major injury that took him down the pecking order at Eyimba.
