Uzoho, Idowu Benched; Onazi Makes 70th Appearance For Trabzonspor

By Johnny Edward:

Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper Francis Uzoho is yet to taste league action for Elche since he arrived from Deportivo La Coruna reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

Uzoho whose only appearance for Elche was in the Copa Del Rey clash against Granada has been an unused substitute in the last four games he has been listed for action.

The 19 year old Uzoho is one of the 24 players invited for this weekend’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against Libya’s Mediterranean Knights.

In Turkey, Ogenyi Onazi made his eight start for Trabzonspor who defeated Akhisar Belediyespor 3-1 away from home in the Turkish Super Lig.

The game was his 70th appearance for Trabzonspor since joined the club three years ago.

His compatriot Anthony Nwakaeme who has made four appearances scoring twice was an unused substitute in the encounter.

In the Moscow derby in Russia, Super Eagles left back Bryan Idowu was an unused substitute for Lokomotiv Moscow who defeated CSKA Moscow 1-0 in a city derby.

Idowu has made two appearances this season in the Russian League.

Uche Agbo replaced Paul-Jose Mpoku in the 82nd minute as Standard Liege defeated Club Brugge 3-1 in Belgium.

It was his sixth league appearance for Standard Liege this season.

In France, Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu replaced Yann Karamoh in the 67th minute of Girondins Bordeaux 3-0 home win over Nantes on Sunday.

He was cautioned in the 87th minute of the win. Kalu has made six appearances and has scored once.

  • Uzoho benched again. His coach should play him more often or he should move to another club.
As it stands, Akpeyi is the most consistent Goalkeeper of the 3 as he plays week in week out in a Premier league. Common sense dictates that he should start ahead of Uzoho and Ezenwa.

    • You mean the South African “Premier League”? The Nigerian football league (NPFL) is also a “Premier league.” Almost every country has a premier league, but the real “Premier Leagues” (true quality) are the EPL, Seria A, La Liga, and Bundes Liga. Honestly though, I think Felix Afelokhai has improved drastically and should be invited to compete for a chance to be Number 1 with these guys.

  • But I agree with you @ Ash Williams, we still have a goalkeeping crises and a serious one at that if we face quality opposition. The last minute siege and barrage of attacks on our goal post by Argentina at the World Cup and the goal that exited Nigeria would have been better managed by a Carl Ikeme or any other top-league playing goalkeeper. Nigeria needs a solution here and fast, otherwise it would again be our Achilles heel at AFCON 2019.

What ifs…what ifs and what ifs…! The Same Carl Ikeme was in goal wen we conceeded a dying minute goal to Moh Salah in Kaduna to put paid to our Afcon qualification in 2016. Personally, I think Theophilus Afhelokai is being done grave injustice. That chap has been the most consistent homebased keeper for the past 5 seasons….playing regularly on the continent for Kano pilars and then Enyimba. Even Ezenwa doesnt come close to him. Its not a suprise he’s no1 in the same enyimba where ezenwa is no 3. It just reminds me of the days of Late Sam Okoye at Enugu rangers, Chijioke Ejiogu at Juliub berger (and later dolphins of Port harcourt) and Vincent Enyeama at Enyimba. The former 2 were far better than vincent, but somehow they had to be stepped down in terms of national team opportunities for Enyeama to emerge….which later paid off quite fortunately for us, given Enyeama’s eventual longevity and top class achievement in europe. Sometimes I dont really know how invitations work in the national team, but something tells me Uzoho will eventually come good.
Akpeyi has always been a no-no for me. His jittery mien always comes to fore even at his club chippa united. Just this last weekend…he brought a ball headed for over the bar back into play to drop it in front of an opposition striker and the striker gladly said thank-you and tucked it into the net.

True talk Akpeyi is a no go area, at the moment theophilus deserves the shot! Countries like England always call inform players experience or no experience, it is very sad that a division 2 bench warmer is our no1 goalkeeper. Theophilus has the reflex and command that uzoho lacks for me uzoho should be no3 goal keeper who should act as an understudy because in a very good country a goalkeeper of uzoho will not be a no1 in the goalkeeping department.
