–Chamberlain hails teen star
By Johnny Edward:
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Nigerian born teenage starlet Chuba Akpom will remain at the Emirates for the coming season and challenge for a place in the first team after his pre-season hat-trick against a Singapore XI in the Barclays Asia Trophy tour, Completesportsnigeria.com can report.
Akpom who made just seven appearances for the FA Cup champions last season must be efficient week in, week out, to win a place in the team according to Wenger.
” won’t send him on loan. I sent him out on loan last year. I thought he needed that,” Wenger said in his post-match interview.
“This season no, I plan to keep him with us. It’s down to performance and attitude and he has enough of that way to be a big talent. And, after that, he has to be an efficient player week in, week out, that’s the target.
“This will give him encouragement to do well and work even harder. He’s a young player and it can lift confidence. The confidence you sense in the dressing room from other players is important as well. That can help you.
“He’s a good talent but he has to work and show that in every game.”
Also reacting to Akpom’s heroics was his teammate Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He said: “Chuba is a really good player,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“He’s very powerful and he makes good runs. He told me he made a few I didn’t see. And that’s what he needs to do, make those runs in behind. I thought he did well holding ball up. And, for a striker, it’s important to score and he did that.”
