Who Will Be Rohr’s Number 1 Goalkeeper In Jo’burg?

Who Will Be Rohr’s Number 1 Goalkeeper In Jo’burg?

Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi looks set to start in goal for Nigeria when the Super Eagles visit Bafana Bafana at FNB Stadium on Saturday, Completesportsnigeria.ckm reports.

Nigeria were dealt a blow when number one shot-stopper Francis Uzoho, 20, was ruled out of the game against Bafana due to injury and was replaced by Enyimba’s Theophilus Afelokhai, who performed well for his club during their run to the CAF
Confederation Cup semi-finals.

Uzoho was ruled out for four weeks after his Spanish La Liga side Elche lost 5-1 to Cagiz on
November 5.

Uzoho Confirms Super Eagles Blow, Out Of Action For Four Weeks

It’s understood that Afelokhai will be the third choice goalkeeper following a three-year absence, as Akpeyi and Ikechukwu Ezenwa fight for the number one jersey while Uzoho is away.

Akpeyi, who was part of the 2018 FIFA World Cup squad, has been waiting for an opportunity to play and could get it in familiar territory. He knows the conditions in South Africa and Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr could give the shot-stopper an opportunity to prove himself on Saturday.

The 32-year-old Akpeyi has played 11 matches for the Chilli Boys in all competitions this season, keeping four clean sheets.

The major concern will be that he has conceded 11 goals in as many games.

Rohr Replaces Injured Uzoho With Afelokhai

Afelokhia has kept five clean sheets in the CAF Confederations matches he featured in for Enyimba who crashed out at the semi-final stage while Ezenwa has been generally inactive. He was in goal in only one game for Enyimba in the continent, conceeding two goals in the 3-2 defeat of Benin Republic side, Energie at the U. J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.

I would Love to see Ezenwa In pole

  • Ezenwa should man the post but he should try to master the one on one saves and set pieces. Pls if I may ask, where is that goal keeper of ours who has the leadership instinct while manning the post and equally coordinates his defence beautifully well, Dele Alampasu. That guy won the golden glove at the age group FIFA world cup along side Osihmen and Nwakali. Pls coach Rhor invite Alampasu after this South Africa match to understudy and comfortably substitute Uzoho. We don’t need all these fidgety at the absence of Uzoho. Thanks.
Daniel Akpeyi? No No No… with due respect!

    • Osimhen didn’t play in the FIFA U-17 World Cup(UAE 2013) that Alampasu played in. Delete Alampasu was there with the likes of Chidiebere Nwakali, Akinjide Idowu, Isaac Success, Kelechi Iheanacho, Zaharadeen Bello, Francis Uzoho(Who was the third choice goalkeeper) etc
Osimhen’s set(Chile 2015) included the Likes of Samuel Chukwueze, Orji Okonkwo, David Enogela, Kelechi Nwakali etc

You just rushed to comment rubbish.
Alampasu is not better than the goalies available. He hardly plays for his club.
And he wasn’t on the same set with oshimen(2015)

  • I’ve changed my mind. Ezenwa should man the post—experience at this level.

  • I would have preferred Afelokhai. But on a second thought, the CAF Cup club competition opposition he kept clean sheets against may have offered low quality attack lines compared to national teams of Libya and SA.

As for Akpeyi, he no doubt is unpopular with Nigerians (including me too), but if you look at that infamous match against SA in Uyo again, you’ll see there were a few other players who contributed to the loss. An incredibly overweight Onazi who couldn’t tackle well, an ineffective and inexperienced Awaziem and an ageing Echiejile. Akpeyi was jittery all through too and made blunders again against Argentina in a friendly in Russia.

As for Ezenwa, he looks sharp when playing in SE because his flaws are covered by a more experienced and effective backline of Ekong, Balogun, Shehu/Aina and Collins/Idowu. But whenever he’s playing with a less experienced defence in Enyimba or the CHAN team, he lets in goals easily. Remember Ghana’s B team embarassing him with a 4-1 scoreline in WAFU cup last year?

My verdict: Akpeyi would be handed the glove. And with Awaziem and Echiejile now replaced by Aina and Collins alongside rock-solid Ekong and Balogun (I really think good strikers get the better of Omeruo easily), he should fare well and get less jittery and more confident.

Pls, i use God, Oluwa, Allah, Chineke, Osanobua beg coach Rohr never to use Akpeyi as our goalkeeper on Saturday. Ezenwa is far better. Ds a very crucial match and no room for gambling. Akpeyi can know all abt south africa, bt ds does not gv him an edge over others. Hes an average goalkeeper. Ezenwa kept a clean sheet against cameroun in w/cup qualifying. He can do d work. Up eagles

  • I heard that Afelokhai and Ezenwa are both in the same Enyimba team. For Afelokhai to be benching Ezenwa in Enyimba means that he is better.

    So mathematically, I prefer Afelokhai.

I watch South Africa PSL League purposely because of Daniel Akpeyi who plays for Chippa United. He is not good at one-on-one situation and that is the reason you don’t see him often pulling off fantastic safes. When playing for SE, he is always a bundle of nerves. We should not make mistake of using him in goal as it may be counterproductive. We should remember that the South African players whom he plays with knows his weak points more than we can even imagine. On the other hand, Ezenwa is good at one-on-one situations and he has done his profile a world of good in the 3 matches he played against Algeria and Cameroun in 2018 World Cup qualifiers. By and large, the goalkeeper’s ability has to do with his sharp reflexes and confidence between the sticks. If the training showed that Ezenwa has not lost any of these, then he should be our No. 1 tomorrow against South Africa. As for Afelokhai, he has not been tested in the SE team. His time will however come on Tuesday when SE will be playing Uganda. I wish the SE a resounding victory tomorrow as it will give our fifa ranking a boost and improve the confidence of the team.

  • Our coaches should stop being lazy and cast our goalkeeper search net wider. Why must we always get stuck to some select few?
The following goalkeepers deserve a look-in: Sebastian Osigwe of FC Kriens,Switzerland; Gavin Bazunu of Shamrock Rovers(we’ve got to snatch him up ASAP); David Nwolokor(the most consistent Nigerian goalkeeper in Europe over the past two seasons) of FC Sered,Slovakia; Author Okonkwo of Arsenal; Maduka Okoye of Fortuna Dusseldorf, Germany etc.
We need to start integrating these young goalkeepers and others into the Super Eagles fold else we might experience a goalkeeper crisis when the likes of Ezenwa(31 years old), Akpeyi(32 years old) and Afelokhai(31 years old) hang their gloves soonest.

  • Ezenwa shd be used

I don’t think the coaches are lazy but they just don’t know their job too well. It is so sad that our coaches can’t find a reliable goal keeper.

Why did they called on Afelokhai when they don’t believed in him. I have said before that I wouldn’t surprised to see Akpeyi in goal again. That shows how good our coaching staffs are.

Does our goalkeeper trainers have plans for the future, I don’t think so. I can’t wait to see Ukeme to join the team. Hopefully, they will allow him to do his job.

This is Nigeria, the coaches knew what to do but they wouldn’t do it. For this weekend’s match, all I care about is beating South Africa in South Africa. God bless Nigeria!!!

Guy every day you suggest new players. Always speaks negatively.

    ezenwa! ezenwa!! ezenwa!!!

ezenwa has more medals than all those other mediocre goalkeepers.

ezenwa has more clean sheets than all doz average and below average (uzoho in particular) goalkeepers

ezeenwa has more confidence than all those other useless goalkeepers.

I know our average coach Gernot rhor never learns from the past.tomorrow now you will see him use Akpeyi and he’ll definitely conceed a goal or more.

he’ll say he has confidence in his quality and wants to give him the chance to prove Nigerians wrong just the way he has allowed a striker in a relegation team in ordinary Chinese league to continue to wear super eagles no 9 Jersey.

    • You sure are a clown.

    • Jones 4 weeks ago

When last did ezenwa play a competitive match. All you CSN pundits comment without thinking.

      • moonwalker 4 weeks ago

Ezenwa replaced Afelokhai in the first leg of their Confederation Cup semi final in Aba not long ago and I’m sure was in charge for the return leg.But dats by the way.

@jones, abeg when last did Balogun play a competitive match for his club? You dey watch EPL week in week out so tell us when he was last used as a substitute sef.

will he not start tomorrow’s match?

    • Chima E Samuels 4 weeks ago

Jones don’t worry Akpeyi will keep are you okay now? If you have nothing to say walker pass!

  • I am suspicious at to why Complete Sports Nigeria wrote the above article and by asking readers to vote.
It is no secret that Akpeyi has a poor public image among most Super Eagles fans.
Also editorially, Complete Sports Nigeria very rarely write articles about Akpeyi leading one to believe that even they are not a fan of Akpeyi.
So, now that it is clear that Akpeyi may start tomorrow, they now come up with this toxic article.
    Destiny cannot be averted.
Complete Sports Nigeria can write 100 of these kinds of articles and ask 1 million people for their vote (which they know will be against Akpeyi) if Akpeyi will continue to be a Nigeria international, he will continue to be a Nigeria international.
Akpeyi is naturally the next best option to start tomorrow .
I know he looks jittery but has anyone ever thought that this may just be his natural expression.
Akpeyi is a good goalkeeper who unfortunately has the odd mistakes in him.
Still, Akpeyi is a good goalkeeper and he should start tomorrow.
Theophilus Afelokhai should wait for his turn. Ezenwa is poor.
Anyone who watched the game against Algeria away will know that Ezenwa is poor.
In South Africa, Akpeyi is number one in his club. In Nigeria, Ezenwa is number 3 in his club – rubbish.
People just dislike Akpeyi because of his facial expressions. Akpeyi is better than Ezenwa.

I have told you CSN that these coach Rohr’s fans would attacked you because you said the truth about coach Rohr and his players.

Most of the Nigerians hates the truth and how can the country move forward?

If the coach likes, he can man the goal post, no hassle. As long as he win the match no wahala but if he fumbled again with his tactics or with Akpeyi, ahhhhhh I’m shaking my head for him ooo lol. We all want him to do very well, he must select the best players for the national team lobatan. Ire. God bless Nigeria!!!
