By Adeboye Amosu: Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco head coach Faouzi Benzarti has defended the decision to hand Nigerian striker Chisom Chikatara a starting berth in Saturday’s CAF Super Cup win against Congo Democratic Republic’s TP Mazembe, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Chikatara has endured a difficult time at the African champions since his switch from Nigeria Professional Football League club Abia Warriors in 2016.
The 23-year-old has been hampered by a combination of injuries and loss of form and has rarely featured for the Casablanca club.
He was however handed a starting place by the new coach for the clash against the CAF Confederation Cup holders.
“Chikatara (Chisom) is a good player and during training in the week he showed so much quality and progress. It is my choice to field a particular player or the other,” Benzarti stated during his post-match conference.
“The team will have to be strengthened if we want to retain the CAF Champions League. Each team has one big or two players, who can make a difference in a game. But if I don’t have such a player(s), I will make do with what I have and will try to improve on their abilities.
“I have been in charge for a month, but I have received positive feedback from the players. Some key players have left and I will have to make do with the existing ones.
“Naturally, we have to improve what we have and I must say that I’m happy with the defensive level of the team against a team like TP Mazembe.
“It is always not easy to win against a team of the calibre of Mazembe. There is no reason why we can’t retain the CAF Champions League.”
Wydad won the game courtesy of Amin Thigazaoui’s late free-kick. It was the first time they will be lifting the Super Cup title after two failed attempts.
