Yaya Toure Blasts Morocco Over Failed AFCON Hosting

Yaya Toure has says it is “difficult to understand” Morocco’s decision to refuse to stage the 2015 African Nations Cup.

Earlier this month, the Moroccan authorities announced that they were no longer willing to host the tournament because of fears over the spread of Ebola.

They had previously asked for the event to be postponed, but the African Football Confederation (CAF) rejected that request.

The confederation later announced that the tournament would not be hosted by Morocco, which would not take part in the event when it found a different host nation.

Manchester City star Toure told France 24 that, because Morocco will still stage the FIFA-sanctioned Club World Cup next month, he did not understand its decision not to host the African Nations Cup.

The Ivory Coast midfielder said: “The health reasons given are not valid. The Nations Cup is the summit of football in Africa. Morocco has not taken into account the disappointment of Africans.

“The political decision has taken precedent. Morocco is a great football nation, but the country partly lives off tourism.

“Playing without knowing where the Nations Cup will be played is difficult – the qualified teams won’t even know if it will be held or not. But we have faith in the CAF, which can find a solution.”
