Yobo: These Eagles Will Outperform My Set At World Cup

By James Agberebi: Former Nigeria international Joseph Yobo has tipped the current Super Eagles team to do better than previous Nigerian teams at the World Cup.

The Eagles became the first African team to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia a hard-fought 1-0 win against Group B opponents Chipolopolo of Zambia in Uyo on Saturday.

Alex Iwobi’s 73rd minute goal secured the ticket for the Eagles who will be heading to their sixth appearance at the World Cup.

The win took the Eagles to 13 points, while Zambia remain second on seven points. Cameroon who defeated Algeria 2-0 are third on six points and the North Africans are bottom on just one point.

Reacting to the qualification, Yobo who was in the Eagles squad to the Korea/Japan 2002, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 World Cups, hailed Gernot Rohr’s players for achieving the feat.

“Congratulations again guys. Going to the World Cup is dream stuff. Y’all are going to do better than us!” the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winning captain wrote on his verified Twitter handle on Monday.

The Eagles’ next game is against Algeria in Constantine in November.

  • Thank God you know…

  • Reaching the second round in a World Cup(WC) tournament is a feat. It is even a feat to be among the 32 teams going to the WC. Even when it is increased to 48 countries and a country qualifies, it is a feat. There are about 208 FIFA affiliates countries and Islands. There are about 58 countries in Africa. You see the points? Nigeria is representing Africa as one of the 6 countries going to the WC. They have already achieved a feat. At least we wilo play 3 matches. Any thing more than 3 is extra-feat. Quarter finals is over-feat. Semi final is enlarged-feat. Final is extream feat. Winner is best-of-superior-feat. I already have this feeling that we can reach the round of 8 aka q-final with good preparation and hard work. Just believe, Nigerians.

Lol! Nice one bro. I still have the same believe that rohr surprise the world with the team he is putting up for russia 2018. What really endeared him to my heart is non sentimental attitude when it comes to players selection. He also respects this professionals as they accord the same to him. Its no surprise not to hear any form of rancour btw him and any member of the team since he took over unlike our previous indeginious coaches, thats signifies how professional the german is. He makes out time to scout players of nigerian heritage in europe and also tries everything possible to convince them to dorn the national colour. This practice is already yielding results by equiping the team with more players which brings healthy competition of slots in the team. Also the majority of the players are young which means he is not just building a strong team for immediate results but one that will last over half a decade.
